Diet Info On The Powerhouse of Fruits & Vegetables

powerhouse1.jpgSadly, the majority of people just do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. A lot of research have been carried out on these powerhouse fruits and vegetables and suggested that people would get the most disease fighting benefits if they opt to make them the main choice in their diet. Powerhouse fruits and vegetables are very colorful and tend to have higher levels of vitamins like folic acid and vitamin c, and phyto-chemicals which are beta-carotene and flavanoids.

Phyto-chemicals is the plant pigment which gives out the different colors in fruits and vegetables. Phyto-chemicals has a natural bioactive compound, an antioxidants and when combine with nutrients would help to slow the aging process and reduce the risk of many chronic or lifestyle diseases.

As not all fruits and vegetables are created equal, hence it is important to eat in variety of at least two servings of fruits and two servings of vegetables everyday. The best way to keep track of which fruits and vegetables are better choices, is to identify them by their colors.

Here are some of the powerhouse fruits and vegetables :

Orange/Yellow : Carrot, papaya, pumpkin, mango, bananas, orange, jackfruit, maize, cantaloupe,

Green : All dark green leafy vegetables example spinach, broccoli, brussels sprouts, water cress, kiwifruit, cucumber, green grapes or asparagus

White : cauliflower, cabbage, radish, turnip, bean sprouts,

Red : tomato, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, red grapes, watermelon, red peppers, wolfderries, red dates,

Hi Viv,

Thanks for a very practical post. I’m mostly vego in my eating, so I tend to get enough veg, but maybe not enough fruit.

Just btw did you know that in Traditional Chinese Medicine they also talk about the colours of fruit and having a mixture of the colours each day?

Hi Evan,

You are welcome :)
Could you please enlighten more regarding the colours of fruits in TCM? I have not heard about this and am very intrigued…

Thank you so much…

Hi Viv,

The five colours (like the five flavours) are linked to the five elements (water, wood, fire, earth, metal).

The correspondences are:
water - black (seaweeds)
wood - green (esp dark greeny leafy veg)
fire - red (eg chilli)
earth - yellow (the colour of the earth in (some parts of) China - I’ve never got an answer to why we shouldn’t change this association in countries with different coloured earth) Eg some potatoes or even through to pumpkin, and
metal - white.

The colours aren’t nearly as detailed as the flavours and aren’t used for healing. But eating the five colours will largely give a good balanced diet (so long as you eat natural foods not artificially coloured ones).

Hope this is clear.
